Harry Potter Series fandom

Ever since I was child, I have been a bookworm. Well, it’s not like each time you see me I am reading but truly it’s one of my hobbies. And just like any other booklovers, I am also one of the avid readers of the popular series “The Harry Potter”. It started after watching The Sorcerer’s Stone in DVD last Christmas 2001. And because of the fact that my mom would not give me money to buy books such as those (because they prefer academic books, books that are required in school), I ended up borrowing it and all the succeeding published books except the last installment of the series (The Deathly Hollows) because I downloaded the e-book and printed it. I succeeded reading the series by merely borrowing it, and now that I have my own work, one of my plans is to buy it, June 30 had passed (last day of work) and up till now I don’t have it. waaa..

I really love this series because of the feeling of excitement it gives me, waiting for the next book to be released. Because of this thrill, the last book (before the next release) that I read I ended up reading it all over again.

Harry Potter and the…

Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone – 5x

Chamber of Secrets – 3x

Prisoner of Azkaban – 8x

Goblet of Fire – 4x

Order of the Phoenix – 5x

Half-blood Prince – 3x

Deathly Hallows – once (because it’s not a book, e-books give me headache. hehe

Jotting down the numbers I have read each book, I realized “am I that dull?!” Haha.. The third book The Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite; I read it numerous times, because it’s the first book that revealed significant events and story, the story of James (Harry’s father) and his friends in particular. Next to my list is the Order of the Phoenix, it’s the first book that I bawled my eyes out, it was when Sirius (Harry’s godfather) died. Huhu. After that, the Half-blood Prince, I also wept when Professor Dumbledore died. Huhu.. I was that engrossed with my reading that I ended up bawling each time a character dies. I also like the other books not that much compared to the first three.

I really like this series and I wish there will be another series like this, and when that time comes I will definitely buy it. :)

Freshmen Night 2008 (June)

Sounds fun isn’t it! After working our butts off (haha.. as if we’re that busy), rather than going home we made a stopover at the administration building to witness the annual practice of the University of welcoming the freshies. I was so disappointed because it rained heavily, the show started late (it was already 7 pm and yet the presentations of the freshies didn’t even got started). Boredom got to me and I was yawning the whole time not to mention that it was really cold. I never felt like a stranger in the school (after being present in every activities, events, presentations, seminars, etc. for 7 years) not until now (June 27, 2008) that our friends were presently serving their suspension. Waaa.. It was really an odd feeling that no one would welcome you, laugh with you and tease the freshies together with you. Huhu. Thus, we ended up eating all the pika-pika sold there. After that, came a realization that it was not fun at all so we decided to go home. On our way to the sakayan came the funniest argument I have ever heard in my entire life. Hihi.

Guy: Tahimik na place

Girl: ---------

Guy: Tahimik na place lang jud ang akong ginapangayo.

Haha.. What was that?! When we arrived at the sakayan we laughed our hearts out, the guy should have stayed silent while we were passing them. Haha…

We Shall Return Part III

Continuation...

"I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next." ~Gilda Radner

9. IBM Thinkpad Laptop
This thing may not be the newest laptop now but it really is the best we had in our busy days (imagine it edgematched 23 maps). Wow! That is definitely an accomplishment.

10. Sandals

Our bossing’s sandals. When he left for Australia, I borrowed it even though he didn’t know. Hehe. It helped my feet breath for a while.

11.U
PS
Loads of times NPA bombed TRANSCO’s electric pylons thus numerous Mindanao-wide and citywide blackouts occurred and this little buddy helped me several times in saving my work.

12. Cabinet

The jam-packed cabinet in the room consists of map books (ArcView, ArcMap, and Edrisi manual/tutorial), map newspapers and bond papers.

Plus, I’d also miss these things:
Classified image of Mt. Hamiguitan made by
one of our former colleague located right at the door, our bossing’s working area (na nilulumot na) because no one is using it, our little buddies (stapler, scotch tape, pens, etc), bin of scratch paper (the one I used in printing the gazillion pages of Harry Potter), another pc unit I used in edgematching maps, and the poster of our project which I really don’t understand why it is place inside our room rather than outside.

After living and working here for 20 months now, this thing called maps is our job, digitizing, quality control, overlaying and edgematching.

June 30 is coming and yet I don't even know what I will feel when that dreaded Monday comes, but as for now it is better to say goodbye (sayonara) to our beloved office because as they say "All good things will come to an end".

"The world is round and the place which may seem like the end may also be the beginning." ~Ivy Baker Priest

We Shall Return Part II

Moving on.. hehe :)

5. Epson Stylus C65 Printer

My buddy in printing my beloved maps (overlays)

6. My Working Area

My favorite place in the office, with my PC, headphone, scanner, and printer. The most comfortable place ever designed. When our office is cold, this is where I cuddle myself, and sleep when my eyes were tired checking the maps (most especially the contour lines). My PC unit is the greatest thing ever, everything from contours, spot heights, roads, hydros, ArcView, ArcMap, downloads (MP3’s, youtube video, software, cracks, veoh videos, dailymotion, serial key, series, movies ), tutorial, Photoshop, to internet surfing (Work at Home jobs such as Surveys, PTC, MysearchFunds, Blogging, all sites related to boasting my pagerank), and lurking to forums to satisfy the madness I had for Asian Series (soompi, dadddicts, SilentRegrets.com) and tech forums. The most satisfying experience ever in my life is being stuck at my PC for 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week. Boredom may get into me sometimes, but having an internet connection and my PC will made my day.

7. Brother HL-2040 printer

When the famous J.K. Rowling released her last installment of the popular Harry Potter Series (the seventh book entitled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) I was really happy. Since I was broke and didn’t have money to buy the said book I downloaded the e-book (5 days after it was released) and printed it all here. "Ika nga ito ang aking katuwang sa aking paghihirap".. haha. My sincerest gratitude to the best printer and my sincerest apology to our bossing. Hehe. Sorry Sir! :)

8. D-Link 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch

Everything I know (fixing computers, tutorials, troubleshooting) and have (movies, series, e-books, installers) right now I owe it all to this thing.. haha..

We Shall Return Part I

All good things will come to an end.”

Time surely flies fast; June 30 (the last day of work) is right at the corner waiting for me. Being an employee (my first work right after graduation) of the foundation for almost two years has been fun, with all the experiences and the friendships made.

No more taking the same route while going to the office. Our office is like a home to us, the most luxurious and the coziest place in the whole building. Hihi.

When I was at home I was in a better place

– Shakespeare (1564-1616)

As You Like It

It is like home to us because of these:

1. “Astig na Aircon”

Everybody in the building envies our office, since it is the most relaxing place they could find in the building. It is so cold because of our “astig na aircon”, with only three of us living there.

Temperature: 18 degrees Fahrenheit (with the current state of the weather in a tropical country, it is definitely cold)

2. Coffee Freak

Before our “bossing” had his sabbatical leave (PhD study at Australia), we had our free supply of 3-n-1 coffee and FITA (as in red) biscuits. The office is so busy because everyone in the building wanted hot water. Hihi.. Coffee freaks!

3. Conference Table

The most fine-looking conference table in the building, most conferences, meetings, discussions, and consultations in the building would take place in the office.

Also it is where we eat our lunch and merienda.

4. “Tukar-tukar” na phone

The most erratic telephone ever, sometimes it's active, sometimes it's not. Grrr...

Perfect Couple (Korean Movie 2007)

Soo-Jin (played by Hyunyoung) is a young news reporter who accidentally hit a cop named Jae-Hyuk (Lee Dong Wook) with a skewered fish sausage (odang). Jae-Hyuk, who in that time was chasing a drug dealer on foot when he accidentally collides into Soojin. To make it worst, he (Jae-Hyuk) suffers from an acute fear of sharp pointed objects.

This movie is a bit flat. I don't think it reaches a very good climax, somehow. The flow is good at first, but again, it is not climactic. The storyline of the movie is simple and it has a very down-to-earth vibe to it. No over the top crime case, news stuff, and such. The roles of the main leads are very human, and believable.

The title did not really go with the movie. There was no romance sense in the movie between the two, well not until the last part. It was a okay movie, the beginning was kind of boring but the ending was getting cooler. The only one who made me crack up was Hyun Young in the movie. She was mad crazy.

Overall, I actually love this movie. It doesn't try too put in too much stuff or trying to be more sophisticated. Its main objective seems to be to please and entertain the audience.

Fixing my dusty, old printer

After long months of searching and surfing the internet for possible answers on how to fix my dusty, 4-year old Epson C43SX printer at long last my quest has paid off. Lurking on tech forums and applying their suggestions at my own risk, I successfully made my printer work. Plug and play parallel port was not detected by the system is the main problem of my printer. I keep on removing and installing the cable, yet the system won’t find it. After goggling (if there’s such a word) it, I found out that there was a possibility that the parallel port address was disabled in the BIOS setup, so I enabled the port address and tada my beloved printer work.

Virgin Snow (Korean movie 2007)

Virgin Snow/Hatsuyuki no koi is a romantic movie collaboration of South Korean actor Lee Junki (starred in The King and the Clown) and Japanese actress Aoi Miyazaki (starred in Nana). The movie takes place in Kyoto (first part of the movie) and Seoul. Lee Junki plays Kim Min, a South Korean high school that moved with his dad to Kyoto while Aoi Miyazaki plays the role of Nanae.

This movie obviously showed the expected language barriers. The lead cast used a little bit of Japanese, a little bit of Korean, some broken English and a whole lot of hand gestures in communicating with each other.

It wasn't that great but it wasn't that bad either. The storyline is simple. This movie might be okay for people who have never watched dramas before because it is kinda cute, but that might be as good as it can get I think. Miyazaki Aoi was really cute in it though. Also the pinky promise, stamp, sign and copy thing was cute.

Streaming sites banned!

Many school and computer laboratories banned Streaming sites such as youtube, veoh, and dailymotion because of the decreasing bandwidth of internet connection. Here are some tips to access banned sites:
1. the use of proxy servers-
Proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) which services the
requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers (Wikipedia)
2. TOR - A free software implementation of second-generation onion routing, a system enabling
its users to communicate anonymously on the Internet (www.torproject.org)
3. UltraSurf - flagship software product from UltraReach Internet Corp. for Internet
anti-censorship. It enables users inside countries with heavy Internet censorship to visit any
public web sites in the world safely and freely.

Drawback of these is that it won't guarantee the user a nice time viewing their favorite videos, thus there's a site that will help the user enjoy the videos from Youtube, zamzar.com. This site is use to convert files without installing any software for free, and the user can download files from youtube and automatically convert it to different video formats.

These are the Parallel Computation of Nucleotide Mutation and Divergence Time Inferred from Phylogenetic Tree using Maximum Likelihood Method (Nucleotide MDT Computation) developed by Mr. Bernard Klinch S. Clarito II, another is A Working Space for Sequence Alignment and Detecting Informative Sites by Rona Polinar, and last but not the least Computation and Visualization of Synonymous and Nonsynonymous Substitution (CVSNOS) developed by Vennyl Dumajel.

This system uses Java Applet Technology being embedded in the page, thus, inorder to view the program the users need to install Java Plugin. Since this is an applet, Nucleotide MDT Computation which calls Phylip Programs, processing and loading its output takes some time.

EMBCIS site

The Eastern Mindanao Corridor Biodiversity Information System (EMCBIS) is an on-line system about the flora and fauna species found in Eastern Mindanao, Philippines. The system, which is part of the Philippine Eagle Foundation's Eastern Mindanao Corridor Biodiversity Archiving and Assessment Project (EMCBAAP), was designed and developed to provide the users with fast access of species information and their geographic locations. The system was also designed with the aim to be the central repository of biodiversity information in Eastern Mindanao. The fauna and flora species stored in the system were obtained from nine identified key biodiversity areas (KBAs) which cover the Islands of Siargao and Dinagat in Surigao del Norte, the mountains of Hilong-hiong and Diwata in Region XIII, the mountains of Kampalili, Tagub, and Mayo in Compostela Valley and Mt. Hamiguitan in Davao Oriental. Current data suggests that the Eastern Mindanao Corridor is indeed rich in flora and fauna species.

Attack on the pin-up boys (Korean movie 2007)

Attack on the pin up boys stars the entire cast of a Korean band "Super Junior" (well not all since Kyuhyun is not there). The premise of the film is "SHIT", after the unusual attack on a school pretty boy, the same attacks began to happen at different high schools on every month of the same day (14th). Rumors say that the next victims will be at Neulparan High School. Kibum (Kim Kibum), a student, decides to investigate the attacks, he blogs all of the terror events on the 14th of each month, causing the event to become a hot topic within the student body. After several attacks, he(Kibum) predicts that the next victims will be the president of the student body Siwon (Choi Siwon), dance club leader Heechul (Kim Heechul) and the captain of the Judo team Kangin (Kim Young-woon). Ridiculous isn't it. hihi.. but as ridiculous as it is, it gave the viewer some good laugh. It was reaaly hilarious with shit thrown to the face. this may be not the greatest movie i have seen, but as singers, not actors (although some are experienced) they did really well. it was okay. It may certainly won’t make you re-evaluate the meaning of life, but it will provide for at least an hour of laughs and intrigue.

Two Faces of my Girlfriend (2007 Korean Movie)

A South Korean romantic comedy that revolves around a girl with multiple personalities played by Jung Ryeo-Won (Which Star are you from), while Gu-chang (Tae-gyu Bong) is 30 years old, still in college, unemployed and leeches on his family. One day, Gu-chang falls asleep on a subway, after a night of drinking. When he wakes up, he sees a girl that he mistakes for a ghost. The girl isn’t a ghost, but works as an extra in a horror film. She’s on her way home, after becoming ill on the set of the film. Gu-chang doesn’t know this and immediately runs away from her. He drops his cellphone, which the girl picks up. And then they meet again eventually. I like these parts: "I've been waiting
for my girlfriend.

She's very nice, pretty,
and smiles a lot.

She loves rice cake
and eats 3 portions of pork.

She can fight
and protect me from muggers."

This movie definitely has its own heart, and its own quirks. I really like it. Although similar to My Sassy Girl in some aspects, the movie still manage to be unique in its own. The cast is Excellent. Much credit to JRW and BTG.

Edgematching in ArcView 3.3 combine with Append function of ArcGis 9

Edgematching is to combine multiple themes (shapefiles, feature classes, etc.) into a single file. To combine a huge size feature class in ArcView 3.3 is difficult because it will generate an error called "segment violation", thus I used the append function in ArcGis 9. First is to create a blank feature similar to the one you want to edgematch, then edit the table similar to the feature table you want to combine using ArcView. Next is to follow these steps:

ArcCatalog Method:

1. Launch ArcCatalog.

2. Access the list of ArcToolbox functions by pressing the button or using the Window > Arc Toolbox pulldown menu.

3. In the ArcToolbox list, navigate to and double-click the Append tool, found here:

Data Management Tools > General > Append

4. Drag-and-drop (or browse to) one or more input themes from ArcMap into the Input Features list.

5. Drag-and-drop (or browse to) your output theme in the Output Features text box.

6. In the Schema Type field, choose “TEST” if you want to ensure that files will only be combined if they have the same attribute fields. In this case, the destination theme will receive all features from the input themes as well as their attributes values. If your input data have different attributes than your output data, you will need to choose “NO TEST” to complete the append function.

7. Press OK.

To view the step-by-step procedure with images just visit this site http://www.urban-research.info/ur/GIS%20Skill%20Builder-Merging%20Themes.shtml

After combining the themes, Open it in ArcView, then zoom in the edge, then connect the two lines with another line.

I love my younger sister (Japanese movie 2007)

A very taboo story about incest and love between twins (Yori and Iku). The movie starts with the twins when they were little in a field, Yori giving Iku a ring which is made of flower saying that she will be his bride. Forward years later, Yori`s (Jun Matsumoto) attitude has change, he's been different -- eager to be apart from Iku (Eikura Nana). This movie is very quiet, there are scenes that I fell sleepy because it was just them, staring, no talking, no background music.. i felt that the director don't like music at all. haha.. the last scene feels rather off because i don't think that the story was supposed to end that way..

Going Crazy Waiting (2007 Korean Movie)

Story of 4 different Korean couples heartbroken from their separation caused by compulsory military service. The boyfriends goes off to army for 24 months, and the girlfriends waiting and doing their own thing. A romantic comedy that is very heartwarming and sad as well. A nice story of love, betrayal and letting go. It's enjoyable, I like how some couple came back together and some broke up, and was based on true stories. Not what we expect, the Happy-ever-after ending. I love the ATM message, it was so sweet, such a cute and creative idea.. :) The ending was a bit rushed but all-in-all, it was a good movie.
